The media is fantastic; it is one of the most creative outlets in the world. I have been a broadcaster since 2009 and have a natural skillset in this area. I am always open to discussions about any potential opportunities that may present themselves in this realm, so please feel free to get in touch if I can be of any assistance.
I have hosted a number of podcasts and provided voice overs for businesses on a freelance basis, and continue to offer my services in this regard. It is something which I greatly enjoy. Podcasts are a great way of helping reach a new audience and they are taking a progressively larger market share. It is an exciting realm.
As a historian and broadcaster, I am available as a talking head or documentary presenter in a number of areas, but especially in space history, marketing and branding, and motor sports, across all audio and video mediums. I am also available as an event host in these areas as well.
Being a professional radio presenter was an incredible experience. Ipswich 102 no longer exists, a victim of the pandemic and then taken over by a national brand, but it was great fun whilst it lasted. Bringing proper local radio back to the town was very rewarding and I was lucky enough to be on the station five evenings a week, four hours a show. I hosted the NYE show and often the first breakfast show of a new year too, and looked after the Sunday breakfast show for a few months too. My listening figures were really encouraging, being the commercial market leader in key markets for average listening figures, beating national stations like Heart and Kiss.
When I left sixth form, way back in 2009, I didn’t really like the bloke that I was. He was a bit awkward, he wasn’t very cool, and I didn’t really like looking at him in the mirror. To say that I didn’t have any confidence would be an understatement. Having just turned 18, I found myself at the University of Hull, and I signed up to the student radio station, Jam Radio, before I did anything else. I signed up because the idea of doing it terrified me. Little did I suspect that I would discover one of my life’s greatest passions.
After my wilderness years post-graduation, I got to return and help lead a station, Rebel Radio, whilst I did my masters at the University of Essex. That was a great time, and I rediscovered my lost love. I had really missed radio in my working life. It was good to be back. So good that when my masters was coming to an end, I decided to join the Student Radio Association team. I had two wonderful years as Production Officer, working with an amazing group of people, and then moved into the Judging Coordinator role.
I'm still doing this role, a fair few years on, and hope to be able to keep doing so for a little while yet. It's great to see the amazing radio that is made by students across the country, and getting to interact with industry is wonderful.
Anchoring the television coverage for BBC Sport at the British volleyball finals and being the lead commentator for that event was a real highlight of my career. I've lead radio coverage of sporting events such as university derby day and British basketball finals. Motor sport coverage is high on my agenda.
In terms of video, I was the first Director General of Hull University's student television station and hosted the first videos created there. I have experience with video presenting and it is something which I enjoy.
I was fortunate to be invited to talk at TEDxChelmsford in 2019 and tick off one of my big life ambitions of delivering from that famous red carpet. My talk looked at whether search engine results had any kind of political bias, and whether this mattered or not. At this time, I was working in digital marketing with a Google Partner agency, and was concerned (as I continue to be) about how we obtain information in our lives these days and whether we subject our sources to suitable rigour for their accuracy and trustworthiness. TED have rules about making political statements in their talks, and I think this one just squeezed through to be allowed online...
It was a huge honour to be inducted as an Honorary Life Member of the Student Radio Association in the HLM class of 2023; the highest accolade that the SRA can bestow upon someone.
Student Radio has been the absolute making of me. It's no exaggeration to say that I would not be the person that I am today had it not been for student radio. To paraphrase the Royal Navy, I may have been born in Colchester, but I was made in student radio. It never leaves you. For all my years working in and alongside the SRA, all I have been trying to do is give back to student radio just a little bit of what student radio has given to me.
Being a HLM means so much to me. It's the greatest honour I could ever have.

As Production Officer for the SRA, I was responsible for all production elements of the headline events for the organisation, which ran with a combined budget north of £150,000 annually. The Student Radio Awards are held at the O2 in London and are the biggest student media event in Europe - and are bigger than many professional media events too. Since 2020, I have been the lead Social Media Interview Producer for the British Arrows and Young Arrows awards events.
In my final role in digital marketing, I ran a number of events for educating businesses on SEO, PPC, CRO, and similar areas, including speaking at conferences and delivering guest lectures for a number of universities. Public speaking is a great passion of mine, and I have worked with a communication coach previously to take my skills to a higher level.
Running events is great fun and something which I greatly enjoy. Any opportunities to help working on events are always welcomed!
