So, who am I?
I was born in Colchester, Essex, but with my accent, I just generally sound like I am from 'England.' I've got two younger but taller brothers, which is an achievement when I am 6'4" and they're about half-a-foot taller than me. As you'll discover on the other pages here, I am very much a historian and love a bit of broadcasting, especially radio. Beyond those, there are a couple of other passions that I have which help fill the hours of the day...
My earliest memory is sitting on the floor of my grandparents' house, watching the 1996 San Marino Grand Prix on their television. I couldn't tell you what happened, but I remember seeing the vivid gold Jordans and red Ferraris coming through the chicane and the heat haze. As first memories go, it's one that I'm pretty happy to have.
Motor sport has been one of my greatest passions ever since. Watching my hero Jenson Button win his world title in 2009 was amazing, as was getting to visit the BrawnGP garage at Silverstone that year. In 2013, my Dad and I got to visit the wonderful city of Austin, Texas, where we were VIP guests with one of Caterham's sponsors. Since the start of the 2000 season, I've watched every single race on television or at the track, and proudly support McLaren (although everyone loves Ferrari at some level and I will always have a soft spot for Williams too).
In 2023, I attended the 24H Le Mans race for the first time, which was amazing. My stag do that same year was at the BTCC meeting at Snetterton. I've volunteered at the Goodwood Revival and been among crowds as low as about 15 people at some events. Racing is in my blood, and you can guarantee that - much like British people traditionally do with the weather - I will either be watching racing, have just watched racing, or be about to watch racing. I'm actually watching WEC as I write this! Talk to me about motor sport and you'll have a friend for life.
I'm very blessed to have such an amazing family and group of friends. I like to try and spend as much time as possible doing things with them or just chilling out with them.
There's no secret about it - we're in a climate crisis. One of my favourite tweets of all time was by Valorie Clark, who when speaking about elections said that we need to 'Stop asking candidates if they “believe in” climate change and start asking if they understand it. It’s science, not Santa Claus.' I think that's the right approach. We have to act now to save the planet for the future. I'm fascinated by the new technologies that come along which can help. As someone who has always loved cars and racing, I also have to acknowledge that I am bit of a hypocrite in that regard, but there's progress in that arena and it's quite exciting to see it come along.
I've been very pleased to support a number of charities over the years. For a long time, I raised money for Blood Cancer UK, including volunteering at a number of events and walking over 100km of the Sahara desert. I've also supported UNICEF, Greenpeace, the University of Hull's student mental health fund, the Robin's Foundation, the Avon Wildlife Trust, Breast Cancer Now, and the RNLI. I'm currently looking for new opportunities to raise money for the RNLI over the next few years.
It's not just engines and wheels that I like to watch. In the world of football, I've followed the Lionesses for a long time and was fortunate to be at the Euros final in Wembley. I'm also currently a season ticket holder for the Bristol City Women's team. In men's football, I keep tabs on my University teams - Hull City, Colchester United (also my hometown team), and Bristol City - and I try to get to games when I can. I've adopted the Bristol Bears as my rugby team since moving to the city a couple of years ago, and I used to go to the Army/Navy game at Twickenham every year. Alongside this, I enjoy cricket (following Essex and Glos), pretty much all winter sports, and snooker. For American sports, I'm a Giants fan in the NFL, and support the Texas Longhorns at collegiate level (including taking the opportunity to catch them at baseball, softball, and basketball games during my research trip there).
I always used to think I didn't like sport. Then I realised I always read the back pages of the newspaper first...
